How to Pitch a YouTube Viewer: Talking Babies Are a Good Start

YouTube’s homepage is some of the most valuable real estate on the Web: A “click to play” ad on the top right corner of the page costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, justified by the Google (GOOG) unit’s enormous reach.

But those ads only work if people click on them, and the performance can vary dramatically. Web video tracker TubeMogul evaluated the views generated by 10 different video ads, each of which ran on the home page for a day earlier this year. Check out the range:

OK. So what does that tell us?

Maybe that YouTube’s core demo — 58 percent of the site’s users fall in the 15-24 range, TubeMogul estimates — like ads with talking babies (who doesn’t?). And that they have very little interest in tax software or Italian cooking travelogues.

Is the Facebook “Like” Button Like a Twitter RT? Loic Le Meur Talks About the Impact of the Giant Moves on Start-Ups

Here’s an interesting interview BoomTown did last week with Seesmic Founder and CEO Loic Le Meur, whose status update client software is one of the more popular ones, at the Facebook f8 developers conference last week.

In it, he talked about the various new features of Facebook that make it “very, very close to Twitter.” Such as the new “Like” button being like a retweet on Twitter.

(Actually, the French-born Le Meur calls the microblogging service “Tweeee-ter.”)

In any case, he made some interesting points, especially since Seesmic–among others–was caught up in the controversies around the entry of Twitter into businesses so far pioneered by innovative third-party satellites of Twitter.

Still, Le Meur sought to downplay the conflict–even after Twitter bought the competing Tweetie desktop client–with a blogpost titled: “F*CK you naysayers. Twitter did NOT f*ck us and just rocks.”

Alrighty then!

And while it is true that Seesmic is more than just a Twitter client–with Facebook, LinkedIn and more in its dashboard for the desktop and mobile devices–Le Meur has to hope that competition between the microblogging service and the social networking giant is a good thing for smaller start-ups in their ecosystem, such as Seesmic.

What Will AT&T Do When It Loses iPhone Exclusivity? What Can it Do?

Discussing AT&T’s latest quarterly results on a conference call this morning, CFO Richard Lindner casually mentioned that the company has in its pipeline some “new products and product refreshes we’re excited about.”

He didn’t name any of them, but it’s a safe bet that at least one of the devices to which he referred is Apple’s next-generation iPhone, perhaps the last for which AT&T will have an exclusive.

As much as the debut of that device bodes well for the AT&T (T), the carrier’s dependency on it as a profit driver is becoming a worrisome vulnerability.

Consider this: In its first quarter, AT&T activated 2.7 million Apple iPhones. A third of those, about 891,000, were purchased by new subscribers. Which means, as Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett observed today, that the iPhone drove about 174 percent of AT&T’s post-paid net additions (the company had about 512,000 post-paid net adds).

That’s an astonishing percentage. But what would AT&T’s post-paid numbers look like if the company loses iPhone exclusivity and Verizon (VZ) begins selling the device, as some believe it soon might?

My guess: They would be quite a bit smaller. And that’s the concern some analysts are voicing today. As Moffett wrote in a note to clients this morning, “The question of what AT&T will do if and when they lose iPhone exclusivity is hard to escape.” Indeed. By some estimates nearly a third of AT&T’s post-paid customers are sticking with the company primarily because of iPhone exclusivity.

But ultimately, what can AT&T do? Not much, unless it manages to score a similar exclusivity deal on another device that rivals the iPhone in popularity. Other than that? Gird itself for the inevitable blow, I suppose. Continue to improve its network, do its best to hold on to the iPhone owners it has and continue signing up new ones.

The truth is that AT&T has known all along that its exclusive relationship with Apple (AAPL) would change someday and has undoubtedly already factored this into its plans.

As Linder told Reuters today, “…at some point [Apple] will, as they have in other countries, make the decision to broaden [iPhone] distribution and move to a non-exclusive arrangement. When that occurs at some point, I fully expect we’ll continue to be a good partner with them, and continue to carry a full range of Apple devices.”

Rhapsody Starts Its New Life With Price Cut and an Investment From Universal Music

Rhapsody starts life as an independent company this month and the music subscription service is marking the occasion with a price cut: It is lowering the price of its all-you-can-eat offering from $15 to $10 a month.

The service, formerly a joint venture between RealNetworks (RNWK) and Viacom’s (VIA) MTV, has two new investors. Real and Viacom each own about 47.5 percent of the company, and Vivendi’s Universal Music Group now owns a minority stake–something less than five percent. An undisclosed investor owns something much smaller than that.

Rhapsody’s managers will tell you that their new corporate structure gives them a better shot at turning around the music service, which has lost money for years and has recently been losing subscribers as well–it’s now down to 675,000. They predict they’ll generate $130 million in revenue this year and turn profitable by the end of 2010.

But consumers won’t care about any of that. The core question about them: Is there any amount of money they’re willing to pay for a monthly music subscription that lets them listen to whatever they want wherever they are?

Rhapsody’s price cut brings it in line with the $10-per-month offering Thumbplay announced earlier this year. If you want to spend less, both Best Buy’s (BBY) Napster and MOG offer $5 monthly subscriptions, but neither supports mobile phones (yet), so they’re only good for people who do most of their listening within earshot of their PCs.

Meanwhile Spotify, the music industry’s great European hope, has yet to make it to the U.S. despite many months of promises and negotiations. And lots of folks insist/believe/hope that Apple (AAPL) will eventually offer some sort of subscription service, or at least some kind of portable option that involves the cloud.

In the meantime, the overwhelming majority of people who do pay for music online do it in $1 increments. Apple is still selling some two billion songs a year via iTunes.

Google Takes a (Small) Stab at Fixing Twitter Search

Twitter has a lot going for it. But search isn’t one of those things.

Even the service’s biggest fans concede that looking for something on Twitter, which can only return results in chronological order, is frustrating at best.

Twitter knows it, too. COO Dick Costolo told me yesterday that his company has a dedicated team working to improve search and that we should expect to see improvements throughout the year.

Meanwhile, other people are taking a crack at it. TweetUp, for instance, intends to lure eyeballs to its ads by promising search results that favor particularly “great” tweets and tweeters.

And here’s a tweak today from Google: A feature that lets searchers comb through the Twitter archives and pull results from a particular time period.

Google (GOOG), which has a short-term contract to syndicate Twitter’s stream, is only offering the feature for tweets going back to February 11 this year, but the company says it will eventually offer the service for all the tweets generated in Twitter’s four-year history (see image below; click to enlarge).

That’s not nearly enough to fix Twitter search, but it is cool. And probably useful in some situations.

The feature is rolling out now, but it may take a while to show up on your laptop. To see if it’s available, go to “options” on your search results page and pick “updates.” If you still don’t see anything, you can see a sample version here, though I was only able to get it to work with the Safari browser, for some reason. Go figure.

Mac Quicken Gets Deductions for Iffy Upgrade

Despite all of the success Apple (AAPL) has had with its Macintosh computers, the Mac has lagged behind Windows in personal-finance software.

The most popular program in the category, Intuit’s Quicken, comes in a Mac version. But it isn’t as good as the Windows version, dates from 2006, and requires an often tedious and flawed process for converting your data from the Windows version.

As a result, many PC owners who consider buying a Mac but rely upon Quicken resist switching. Or, they resort to work-arounds, such as installing Windows on their new Macs or keeping around an old PC—solely to run the more robust Windows version of Quicken.

This week, Intuit (INTU) hopes to alleviate this situation with an all-new $60 version called Quicken Essentials for Mac, or QEM for short. The company describes QEM as the first version of Quicken developed specifically to run on a Mac, as opposed to being copied from a Windows product. It also says the product was influenced by a Mac-savvy team from Mint, a Web-based personal-finance service Intuit acquired late last year.
